This past week we headed to California for the annual King family vacation to the NCAA tournament. This year was a little different because the grand kids were left at home. I drove out with my siblings and Mom while my Dad and Andrew flew out to California. We got there Wednesday night at an awesome house that my mom had found. It was an old house that had been completely renovated and had a heated pool which was a bonus.
On Thursday we headed to Cabrillo Beach. This is the beach where one of our favorite TV shows (Chuck) had filmed some pretty big moments in the series. Most of my family watched this show so we were all pretty excited to be there. After we took our pictures and played on the beach we headed to an Aquarium that was right there. It was a pretty decent Aquarium with a good variety of sea life. We even got to see an octopus eat a shrimp. The boys that night headed to watch basketball and the girls walked around downtown disney, ate at Cheesecake Factory, and watched Saving Mr. Banks.
On Friday we headed to Disneyland for the day. This was the first time my family had been to Disneyland all together since 1998 when we went to Disneyland Paris. Andrew and I had convinced my family that with our cool app that we would not have to wait super long even though the park was predicted to be packed. Andrew and I were at the gates at 8:00 while the rest of my family came later. We walked right on to our first two rides but after that the longest that we waited was about 25 minutes with most of the waits being 10-15 minutes. It was unbelievable because all the waits listed were at least 40 minutes or more. The most memorable moment of the night was during the Fantasmic show. Andrew and I stayed at the park while the rest of my family headed back to the house because we wanted to watch some of the shows and ride more rides. We were at the part when the pirates and Peter Pan come around the corner with their ship and canons. Right as that happened the ground starting shaking. At first I thought, "Wow, how are they making the ground shake with the cannons? This is pretty cool that they can do this." Then the lights went out and the music stopped. The announcer came on the speakers and said, "Due to unforeseen circumstances the show has been canceled." Everyone kind of looked at each other and said that was an earthquake. Luckily it was not too chaotic but there was just a lot of people all trying to leave at once. We also could not use our phones because so many people were on trying to figure out what had happened. Instead of waiting for all the rides to be inspected to ride them again we decided to head home. It was really crazy!! The rest of my family had said that the house was shaking pretty good and the pool had waves in it. We found out later that it was a 5.1. For the rest of the trip we felt at least two earthquakes a day even though there were a lot more.
On Saturday we headed to Newport Beach. We walked along the pier and watched the surfers, fisherman, and seals. They also had a cute doughnut shop along the beach that had some pretty good doughnut holes that we tried. I don't like doughnuts but these were GOOD. The boys then headed back to the last basketball game where they were almost hit by fireworks afterword. The girls stayed home to watch the Women's Broadcast and play games. We then ended the night with some hot tubbing. We even got my mom in the water which NEVER happens.
On Sunday we made the 11 hour trek back to Utah. My mom was a trooper and drove the whole way while the rest of us watched movies.
It was a really fun trip and the last time we will all be together for a long time. Andrew even had to say goodbye to my oldest brother and wife because he won't see them till Christmas. It just made me appreciate my family a lot more and how wonderful it is when we all can get together. A big shout out goes to my parents who planned the whole thing and made it fantastic!! :)
